Today, I had the honor of being interviewed by Bedford & New Canaan Magazine for their 18Under18 project, where they’re featuring me as their “Humanitarian,” partly for my work with the Innocence Project. They asked me where I first got involved with criminal justice reform, and I told them how I had stumbled upon the story of Marcellus Williams, who was put on death row and murdered for a crime he did not commit, and how this injustice had made me determined to fight for all the other innocent people on death row. I was also able to speak about concrete ways in which young people can get involved with criminal justice reform through the Innocence Project, and to publicize my website, Framed to Freedom, which I created to help spread awareness about wrongful convictions and criminal justice reform projects. Finally, I also spoke at length about our prison system’s failed attempt at balancing accountability and rehabilitation for prisoners—a subject that is especially close to my heart, given my uncle’s own incarceration.
I’m thrilled that these ideas will be making their way to a larger audience, and I’m hopeful the interview will encourage new readers to check out the Innocence Project and Framed to Freedom!
